🍼 Surviving a Sapporo Winter with Two Babies

Sapporo in Winter with Two Babies

A midwinter trip to Hokkaido with two toddlers, aged 16 and 33 months. This is a hands-on manual that two families can share, covering getting around on snow and ice, sourcing supplies locally, nursing rooms, medical care, and air travel. (Fares, opening hours, and event dates are based on annual/recent announcements, so double-check the official websites before you go.)

Getting around: baby carrier first, stroller as backup

In midwinter Sapporo, snow, ice, and melting slush are everyday realities. Bottom line: a baby carrier (plus a cold-weather cover) is your main mode, with the stroller as a backup for indoors and clear days.

Baby B (16 months) is just learning to walk, so it's almost always the carrier; Baby A (33 months) is active, so the realistic approach is a hybrid where you switch off, letting the child walk and putting them in the stroller when they tire out. You can borrow a stroller for free at the General Information Desk at New Chitose Airport (limited quantity), which makes the departure and arrival routes easier.

💡 Use Chi-Ka-Ho (地下歩行空間) like a transit line

The underground walkway connecting Sapporo Station to Odori and Susukino is well heated and has elevators, making it ideal for moving by stroller while avoiding the cold and snow. When it gets cold, duck into an underground mall or cafe to rest every 1-2 hours.

Sourcing locally: diapers, formula, baby food

In Hokkaido, baby supplies are easy to find. The right move is to buy heavy, bulky consumables on the ground.

That said, if your baby is used to Korean formula, bring enough of their usual formula for the length of the trip. Switching formula abruptly can lead to upset stomachs or refusal. For wipes, spare clothes, and the like, carry just enough for the plane plus the first day and source the rest locally to lighten your load.

💡 Pack formula and familiar snacks

Bring your baby's usual formula plus a 1-2 day buffer, along with favorite snacks and a pacifier. This reduces the risk of picky eating and stomach trouble, making the whole trip smoother.

The Sapporo area is well equipped with baby facilities, so all you need to do is plan your outings in advance.

When two families move together, bathroom and feeding intervals easily fall out of sync. When you stop at a large facility, make it a habit to do all the diaper changes and feeding at once, everyone together, so you don't get stuck scrambling on the road.

ℹ️ Onsen & large public baths: take diaper-age infants to a private family bath

Most shared public baths prohibit, for hygiene reasons, bathing by 'infants who are not yet out of diapers' (rules vary by facility). Both the 16- and 33-month-olds may fall under this, so choose lodging with an in-room tub or a private family bath (貸切/家族風呂) and confirm when booking. Bathing is usually fine after about 6 months of age and should be kept short, watching for dehydration and dizziness.

Medical & emergencies: pediatrics, pharmacies, 119

In midwinter, fevers, runny noses, and stomach bugs are common. Knowing the basics in advance keeps you from panicking.

Bring the medicines you normally use. Fever reducers (a syrup matched to body weight), digestive remedies, cold and cough medicine, a thermometer, wound ointment, and moisturizer. Before buying travel insurance, check whether it covers pediatric care and overseas medical costs.

⚠️ Bring your medicine kit from Korea

It's hard to figure out pediatric doses and ingredients on the spot abroad. Be sure to pack fever reducers (acetaminophen/ibuprofen syrup), digestive remedies, a thermometer, and any regular medications. Jotting down the drug names and doses will help if you need to see a doctor locally.

Air travel, car seats, and pacing two babies

The age gap between the two babies determines their airfare (the threshold is 24 months).

Car seats (in local vehicles): - Taxis: legally exempt from car seats → you can just ride (for safety, hold the baby firmly in your lap). - Rental cars: car seats are mandatory for children under 6 (no fine for violations, but it adds license demerit points). Rear-facing for infants (0-1 yr), forward-facing for toddlers (1-4 yr). Rental quantities are limited, so be sure to reserve in advance.

Pacing: there's no time difference between Korea and Japan, so the babies' daily rhythm won't be disrupted (a big plus). Even so, protect nap times. A 16-month-old and a 33-month-old differ in stamina and nap patterns, so a realistic plan is for the two families to coordinate along the lines of 'go out together in the morning → nap separately at the lodging or in the carrier → a short outing in the afternoon.'

⚠️ Double-check fares and car seats before booking

The fare cutoff date (24 months) is usually based on the 'travel date.' Compare Baby A's birthday with the departure date to confirm whether a seat is needed. Rental-car car seats sell out fast in peak season, so reserve one together with the car in advance.

⚠️ No thick padding in the car seat

If you fasten the car seat harness over a thick coat or snowsuit, the padding compresses in a crash and the belt loosens, which is dangerous. Dress the baby in thin layers, cinch the harness tight, then keep them warm by covering with a blanket or footmuff on top.

Winter baby packing checklist

Here's a checklist for 'two babies' tuned to cold snaps and snow (sharing common items between the two families is efficient).

Dressing (layering) - 1. Base layer (merino/functional) + snowsuit/padding + carrier cold-weather cover - 2. Waterproof, anti-slip winter boots, plus spare socks, gloves, and a hat (kept separately in a zip bag) - 3. Indoors is hot → use layers that are easy to take off

Feeding - 4. Formula (trip length + 1-2 days), a thermos, a portable formula container, liquid formula (for outings) - 5. Some familiar snacks and baby food, a straw cup/utensils, a bib

Hygiene & health - 6. Diapers (just the first day's worth), wipes, a changing mat, plastic bags - 7. Medicine kit (fever, digestive, cold), a thermometer, moisturizer and lip balm (it's very dry), hand warmers

Travel & sleep - 8. Baby carrier, (optional) lightweight stroller + footmuff, car seat (if renting a car) - 9. A night light, pacifier, comfort toy, sleeping bag/swaddle

Documents - 10. Passport and tickets, travel insurance certificate, a note of regular medications, emergency contacts

Temperature-check tip: touch the back of the baby's neck and back — sweaty means too warm, cold means too cold. Hands and feet are naturally cold, so they aren't a reliable gauge. Indoor heating is very drying, so keep up with hydration and moisturizing too.

ℹ️ Two families = a chance to split the load

Have one family take charge of shared items like the changing mat, medicine kit, and thermos, and handle formula, clothes, and medicine per baby. Share the checklist in your group chat to reduce duplicates and gaps.

Key Points

  • For getting around, the baby carrier (plus a cold-weather cover) is your main mode and the stroller a backup for indoors and flat ground. On ice, parents must wear anti-slip shoes.
  • Diapers, wipes, and baby food can be sourced locally (a pack of diapers is ¥1,400-1,800); bring your baby's usual formula (lower risk of adjustment trouble).
  • Nursing rooms and diaper-changing stations are well provided at airports, department stores, and stations. New Chitose Airport even rents strollers for free (limited quantity).
  • Bring a medicine kit (fever, digestive) and a thermometer from Korea; for emergencies call 119, and when unsure call #7119 (24 hours).
  • Baby A (33 months) may need a seat, while Baby B (16 months) is lap-held. Reserve rental-car car seats in advance (and don't fasten the harness over thick padding).
  • Large public baths commonly restrict bathing for diaper-age infants → check for an in-room tub or a private family bath (貸切風呂).
  • No time difference between Korea and Japan → an advantage for keeping daily rhythm. Protect nap time and respect each baby's own pace.

Good to Know

Japanese diapers (Merries, Moony) are popular reverse-direct-purchase items for Korean parents thanks to their absorbency and softness.
New Chitose Airport lends out strollers for free at the General Information Desks in both terminals (limited quantity) — making your arrival route much lighter.
Korea and Japan have no time difference, so a baby's feeding and nap rhythm stays almost exactly the same.
Japan's 'liquid formula (液体ミルク)' can be stored at room temperature and fed immediately, making it especially handy on outings and in flight.

'New Chitose Airport.jpg' is confirmed to exist (CC BY-SA 3.0). Both files are kept so the builder can fall back on either.
  • Opening hours, fees, and facility locations for December 2026 are estimates based on annual/recent announcements. Re-confirm before visiting on the official sites of New Chitose Airport, Daimaru Sapporo, and Akachan Honpo (the Daimaru Pokemon Center is confirmed to be on 8F as of 2025-26).
  • Events for December 2026 cannot be confirmed: the White Illumination Odori venue and the Munich Christmas Market typically run annually from late November to Dec 25 (some venues such as Ekimae-dori and Minami 1-jo-dori run through February-March). If you visit after Dec 25, the Odori venue and the Christmas Market may have ended — re-confirm the official 2026 schedule.
  • Baby A's (33 months) airfare class (whether a child fare plus a seat is required) must be confirmed with the airline by comparing the exact date of birth and departure date (against the 24-month threshold). Stroller and car seat carry-on rules vary by airline and aircraft.
  • Korean Air's international infant fare (about 10% of the adult full fare) and accompaniment rule (one infant per adult) are subject to change — confirm the official terms at the time of ticketing.
  • Rental-car car seat models for infants/toddlers and their quantities are limited in peak season. Reserving a car seat in advance at the same time as the car is recommended.
  • The operating hours and the scope of multilingual (Korean) support for #7119 (Sapporo Emergency Telephone Consultation Center) and foreigner medical support desks may vary by season.
  • Diaper (¥1,400-1,800 per pack) and formula prices vary with the exchange rate (as of 2026.6, ¥100 ≈ 950 KRW, subject to change) and by store, size, and season.
  • Whether large public baths allow infants (not yet out of diapers) to bathe varies by facility — confirm directly when booking lodging. Generally, shared public baths prohibit it, while family baths and in-room tubs are fine.
