Soup Curry — Hokkaido's signature dish that warms you up in winter (spice level adjustable for babies)

A dish Sapporo made its own. A thin, aromatic spiced broth holds big chunks of vegetables and a chicken leg, and you dip rice into it. A single bowl packs in lots of vegetables, which is great for kids' nutritional balance too.
The key is choosing your spice level. The range varies by shop (GARAKU goes from level 1 to 40, with an extra charge above level 6), and level 1 (the mildest) is barely spicy at all, so even toddlers can eat it. When ordering, ask for "the least spicy level (level 1)."
Signature shops and their features: - GARAKU: A popular spot. The main store has relocated to near Nijo Market (Minami 3 Higashi 2), and there is also a branch in 'sitatte sapporo' directly connected to Sapporo Station, which is convenient for a family's route. Open 11:30–15:30 and 17:00–20:30 (queues and a numbered-ticket system at lunch). Check before visiting for facilities such as kids' chairs. - Suage+: Big chunks of vegetables from their own farm. A wide variety of toppings. - Rojiura Curry SAMURAI: Loaded with vegetables, easy for a family visit. - Okushiba Shoten (奥芝商店): Seating (including tatami floor seating) and the menu lineup vary by branch and by time, so checking ahead is the safe choice when bringing a baby.
Prices are generally ¥1,100–1,700 per person (₩10,100–15,600, varying by shop, toppings, and spice level). Check each shop's official menu before visiting.
⚠️ Freshly served soup is piping hot
Soup curry comes out very hot. Spoon the baby's portion onto a separate plate and let it cool thoroughly, and since the spices are strong, give a 16-month-old mostly the solids (potato, carrot, chicken) mashed up.
💡 Aim for floor seating and kids' chairs
With two toddlers, floor seating (zashiki, 座敷) is more comfortable. That said, whether there are tatami seats or kids' chairs varies by shop, branch, and time, so before reserving/visiting be sure to ask, "Do you have a kids' chair? (子供椅子ありますか)"
Miso Ramen — the rich miso broth born in Sapporo

Miso ramen is believed to be an 'original local dish' that emerged in 1950s Sapporo (said to have been devised at Aji no Sanpei around 1954 and spread around 1955). With vegetables stir-fried in lard and a rich, hot miso broth, it's the best thing to warm you up on a snowy day.
Signature shops: - Menya Saimi (麺屋 彩未): A celebrated spot where locals line up. Miso ramen ¥950 (kara-miso ¥1,000, as of 2025). No reservations, long lines, closed Mondays (plus 2 irregular days a month). - Sumire (すみれ): A rich broth with a thick layer of oil on top, so it stays hot. - Ichigen (えびそば 一幻): A specialist in shrimp (ebi) broth (choose from miso, shio, or shoyu). - Ramen culture is one bowl per person, so turnover tends to be fast, but popular shops are mostly counter seating, which can make a stroller or baby tricky. Hours and closures change often, so we recommend checking the official site/Google Maps before visiting.
ℹ️ Sapporo Ramen Republic (ESTA 10th floor) has closed
'Ramen Republic' (opened 2004), which gathered several ramen shops together, ceased operations on August 31, 2023, along with the closure of the ESTA building. Instead, browse the various shops at Susukino's 'Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho (the original ramen alley).' (With the redevelopment around Sapporo Station, the lineup of ramen complexes keeps changing.)
💡 Feeding ramen to a baby
The broth is salty and hot. Scoop the noodles out separately, rinse and cool them in cold water/dashi, cut them short, and serve; give almost no broth. If you ask the shop whether '取り分け (sharing into portions) is possible?,' they'll bring an empty bowl.
Jingisukan — Hokkaido griddle-grilled lamb with little gaminess

A Hokkaido regional dish where you grill lamb and vegetables on a dome-shaped, helmet-like griddle. Well-prepared lamb has little gaminess, so it's easy to enjoy even your first time.
- Jingisukan Daruma (だるま) Main Store: A long-established Susukino institution founded in 1954. Lamb (Sei Jingisukan) ¥1,290 per plate (₩11,900, as of 2025); budget about ¥4,000–5,000 per person (₩36,800–46,000). The main store is open evening to early next morning (roughly 17:00–5:00 the next day) and is mostly horseshoe-shaped counter seating, making it difficult with a baby.
- Sapporo Beer Garden: Reservations available for the spacious halls and table seating. All-you-can-eat (tabehodai) is offered in some halls such as the Poplar Hall, Lilac, and Kaitakushikan, making it the easiest choice for two families with babies. Note that some halls, such as the Garden Grill, are closed on Dec 31 and require advance reservations (the Garden Grill needs booking 2 days ahead, for parties of 2 or more), so if visiting over the New Year, be sure to check operating days and reservations (reservation center 0570-098-346).
⚠️ Griddle + smoke = watch for baby burns and odors
Since the fire is in the middle of the table, arrange seating so the baby's hands can't reach it. In older shops with weak ventilation, the smell clings to clothes and can be acrid for a baby, so we recommend the well-ventilated Beer Garden / branch table seating.
Kaisen-don, Sushi & Crab — a morning bowl at the market

For the freshest seafood, the morning markets are the answer. - Nijo Market (二条市場): Central and easy to reach. Most shops open around 7 a.m. and generally run until about 6 p.m. (varies by shop). - Jogai Market (場外市場, Jogai): Larger in scale and tends to be more reasonably priced. Open from early morning.
Kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) generally runs ¥3,000–4,500 (₩27,600–41,400, varying by market price and season). Remember three types of crab: - Hairy crab (毛ガニ/kegani): Rich meat and innards, a Hokkaido icon. - Snow crab (ズワイガニ/zuwaigani): Sweet and tender. - Taraba crab (タラバガニ): Big chunks of leg meat, a king-crab type.
For sushi, conveyor-belt (kaiten) sushi is the top pick for families. Places like 'Nemuro Hanamaru (根室花まる)' have table seating and make portioning easy, so they're easy to visit with a baby.
💡 Babies and seafood
Sashimi and raw items are too much for a 16-month-old. Stick to cooked shrimp, crab meat, egg sushi (tamago), and grilled salmon, and pairing it with udon or chawanmushi at the conveyor-belt sushi keeps things steady. Cut crab meat and shrimp small to avoid choking.
ℹ️ Crab prices swing a lot with the market
Prices fluctuate greatly depending on the catch and the season. Sales pitches and on-the-spot pricing are common at the markets, so always confirm the total price per gram/per crab before ordering and paying.
Soft Serve & Cheese Desserts, Plus Seicomart & Hotel Breakfasts

Hokkaido milk is famous for its richness. Even on cold days, soft serve (¥400–500/₩3,700–4,600) is a treat, and the cheese, jam, and bread are top-notch too.
- LeTAO (Otaru): Its signature 'Double Fromage' cheesecake. Sampling and gift wrapping are available at the main store near the Otaru Canal.
- Seicomart: A convenience store chain centered on Hokkaido with over 1,000 locations (about 1,091 as of May 2025). Stores offer freshly made hot lunch boxes ('Hot Chef'), melon monaka, guarana drinks, and more. However, standard hours are 7:00–23:00 (16 hours) as a rule, and only about 20% of stores are open 24 hours, so check the hours at night. For baby emergency food and hot water, it's still a reliable standby.
- Hotel breakfast (buffet): With plenty a baby can eat — porridge, bread, milk, eggs — it makes the first meal of the day a hearty one.
💡 Seicomart = a baby-friendly base camp
Hot lunch boxes, onigiri, milk, and even diapers in one stop. It's easy to ask for hot water to warm formula or baby food, so drop in whenever you spot one along your route. Just note that only some stores (about 20%) are open 24 hours, so check the hours when using one at night.
⚠️ Mind the temperature of cold desserts
Soft serve and ice cream can cause a tummy ache on cold days. Give a baby only a small amount, slowly, indoors. If there's a milk/dairy allergy, checking the ingredients is essential.
How to eat with two families and babies (rooms/reservations vs. avoiding lines)
With 4 adults + 2 babies, a party of 6, securing seats is the crux. First, weigh 'can we all sit together.'
Good places to eat together (tables, reservations available) - Sapporo Beer Garden (jingisukan): Spacious halls + reservations (check closures such as Dec 31 over the New Year and the party-size limit in advance). - Conveyor-belt sushi (Nemuro Hanamaru, etc.): Table seating, easy to portion. - Soup curry with floor seating (Okushiba Shoten, etc.): Easy to lay a baby down or let them crawl (check the seating layout in advance). - Family restaurants and food courts near the hotel: Kids' chairs are common.
Tips for avoiding lines - For popular ramen and the markets, go right at opening (before 11 a.m.) or skip the lunch peak (12–13:00). - Parties of 6 often get split up, so secure a single table with a phone/app reservation when possible. - A 'tag-team' strategy where one family lines up while the other waits with the babies at a nearby café or Seicomart.
Common checks - On entering, a quick "Do you have a kids' chair? (子供椅子ありますか)" and "Can we split it into portions? (取り分けできますか)" is enough. - Allergens (egg, milk, buckwheat, shrimp) are rarely labeled on menus, so confirm directly. - In an emergency: ambulance/fire 119, police 110 (calls are free). Always keep in mind the choking risk for infants from allergens and foreign objects (noodles, crab meat).
💡 A midwinter 'daily meal rhythm'
A hearty hotel breakfast in the morning → lunch at the market/soup curry before the crowds → soft serve or LeTAO for an afternoon sugar boost while resting indoors → miso ramen or Beer Garden jingisukan (reserved) for dinner → late-night snacks and emergencies at Seicomart.

Key Points
- The key to a winter trip is a warm broth — start with soup curry and miso ramen.
- Prices assume ¥100 ≈ ₩920 (exchange rates fluctuate). Miso ramen from ¥950, soup curry ¥1,100–1,700 per person (₩10,100–15,600).
- For baby meals, the three pillars of 'portions of adult dishes + Seicomart + hotel breakfast' are enough.
