Flights & Entry: ICN to New Chitose with Two Babies

Incheon (ICN) to New Chitose (CTS): a direct flight of about 2 hours 45 minutes, with no time difference. This page brings together everything in one place: how to book tickets for two babies (33 months and 16 months), bassinet and stroller services, entry via Visit Japan Web, and how to prepare for snowstorm cancellations in the dead of winter. Fares, schedules, and rules can vary by season and airline, so always confirm with each airline's official site before booking.

About 2 hours 45 minutes, with no time difference. Korea and Japan share the same time zone, so there is no jet lag to adjust to. That is a big plus when traveling with babies. (Based on flight data, the flight time is recorded at about 2 hours 47 minutes.)

Throughout this guide, currency is converted at 100 yen ≈ 950 KRW (based on an actual mid-2026 rate of about 957 KRW), and the real exchange rate fluctuates constantly (this note appears only once).

💡 With babies, choose a 'daytime arrival' flight

Morning departures let you make the most of your first day, but the pre-dawn wake-up is rough. For the babies' sake, a late-morning to midday departure (with a daytime arrival) is the easier choice. In December, Hokkaido has short days (it gets dark by around 4 p.m.) and travel over snowy roads is slow, so it's best to avoid the midnight (00:10) arrival flight.

How to Book Tickets for Our Two Babies

Fare types split completely depending on age. The benchmark is the child's age as of the first departure date of the itinerary.

In the end, a family of 6 plus 2 babies has this basic setup: '4 adults + 1 child seat (Baby A) + 1 infant on lap (Baby B)' = 5 seats.

⚠️ Key cautions on infant tickets

  • If the child is 'age 2 or older,' a seat must be purchased no matter what (this applies to Baby A). 2) Even the infant fare is not free — it costs about 10% of the adult fare, and taxes and fuel surcharges may be charged separately. 3) When booking, register the infant/child as 'accompanying passengers' on the same reservation (adding them later risks separated seats and extra charges). 4) The same rules apply to both outbound and return flights. 5) Fares and discount rates differ by airline, so check the actual fare on the booking screen.

Bassinet, Stroller, In-flight Meals — Onboard Services for Babies

Even on a short route, a single advance request can make or break a flight when you have babies. (The following is Korean Air's official standard; other airlines are similar, but confirm the conditions with each carrier.)

ℹ️ Formula, water, and baby food are exempt from the '100 ml liquid' rule

Despite the 100 ml liquid limit at security screening, when traveling with infants and toddlers aged 6 or under, the formula, breast milk, water, juice, and baby food needed during the flight are allowed even if they exceed 100 ml (per Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport). At security, declare them in advance as 'for the baby' and undergo a separate inspection. It's best to prepare an amount within the bounds of 'as much as needed during the flight.'

💡 For 16-month-old Baby B, check the bassinet height limit

The bassinet has a height limit of 75 cm or less, and at 16 months a child's height often exceeds that limit. Even if you request it, you may not be able to use it onboard if the child exceeds the standard, so treat securing a bulkhead seat itself as the goal and also prepare a baby carrier.

Seat Selection & Tips for Seating 6 People Across Two Families

To keep the two families from being split up, the key is to assign seats early and together.

LCCs often charge for seat selection, but when traveling with babies, it's worth paying to lock seats together in advance.

💡 Book everyone under 'one PNR'

If the two families book separately, the seats easily end up far apart. If possible, process them as one reservation (as companions), or give your reservation number to the airline and ask to have your seats assigned next to each other.

Visit Japan Web & Entry — Visa-free, Passports, QR Codes

Entry into Japan is greatly sped up by pre-registering with Visit Japan Web (VJW).

The scope of shared kiosks and the integrated QR is being rolled out in phases and may differ by airport and timing (including how New Chitose operates), so check the official site once more before you depart.

💡 Register Visit Japan Web in advance for fast entry

Before departure, finish registering everyone in the family while you're in Korea with good Wi-Fi. After arriving at New Chitose, a single integrated QR code speeds up immigration and customs. Saving screenshots too gives you peace of mind even if local data cuts out.

ℹ️ Customs duty-free allowance (check both entry and return)

On entry to Japan, the per-person duty-free allowance is up to 3 bottles of alcohol (760 ml each), 200 cigarettes, and general goods up to a total overseas market value of 200,000 yen (Japan Customs official). Those under 20 are excluded from the alcohol and tobacco allowance, and for children under 6 only items recognized as for their personal use are duty-free. The duty-free limit when returning to Korea is separate (USD 800 per person, with separate limits for alcohol, tobacco, and perfume), so check both sides before shopping.

ℹ️ Don't forget the babies' passports

Infants and children need their own passports too. Issuing passports for newborns and young children takes time, so prepare them in advance and register each of them on VJW as well.

Preparing for Midwinter Snowstorms — A Plan B for Cancellations/Delays

New Chitose has an excellent snow-removal system, but heavy snow from December to February can frequently cause large-scale cancellations and delays. In fact, it was reported that during the record snowfall of late January 2026, 56 flights were canceled at New Chitose Airport in a single day and about 7,000 people spent the night at the airport.

How to prepare: - Build slack into your first-day and last-day plans. If your return flight is canceled, you'll need to be prepared to stay an extra night and have spare budget for it. - Travel insurance (covering flight delay and cancellation compensation) is recommended. Natural disasters like heavy snow are exempt from airline liability, so hotel and meal compensation may be weak. - Keep a baby emergency kit in your carry-on/cabin baggage: plenty of diapers, formula, spare clothes, and snacks. It makes a huge difference during airport waits and delays. - Starting 24 to 48 hours before departure, check the weather and operation status via the airline app and airport flight information.

⚠️ Build a 'one-day buffer' into your return flight

In December, New Chitose's morning flights can be delayed one after another due to heavy snow. If you have important commitments the day after returning (work, daycare drop-off, etc.), it's risky. If possible, book your return flight for an earlier date and earlier time and leave yourself some slack.

ℹ️ Local emergency contacts (save these)

Japan's emergency numbers are 119 (ambulance/fire) and 110 (police) (calls are free). When calling 119, first state whether it's an 'ambulance (救急)' or a 'fire (火災).' For Korean-language consular assistance, you can use the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Call Center (+82-2-3210-0404) and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Sapporo. If you're traveling with babies, save the locations of a pediatric clinic and emergency room near your lodging in advance.

Good to Know

New Chitose Airport is one of Japan's largest airports — its domestic terminal even has a movie theater, a hot spring, and a dining area, earning it the nickname 'an airport that is a tourist attraction in itself.'
Korea and Japan are in the same time zone (UTC+9), so there's no need to change your watch on the plane.
Sapporo ranks among the snowiest of the world's major cities, so in winter the airport's snow-removal team runs around the clock.

⚠ Confirm before you go

  • The operating airlines, schedules, and number of flights for the ICN-CTS direct route in December 2026 vary by season (currently about 12 flights/day, departing 07:20–21:10) — final confirmation needed via each airline's/airport's official site
