❄️ Trip Overview — Winter Sapporo, Two Families + Two Babies

Winter Sapporo Family Trip Overview

December 2026: a 7-day, 6-night escape to Sapporo, a city of snow, hot springs, and great food. Two families traveling together — 4 adults and 2 babies — start by sketching out the big picture of this midwinter Hokkaido trip.

Why Winter Sapporo, and Why 7 Days / 6 Nights

The appeal of winter Sapporo can be summed up in one line: snow, hot springs, and food are all at their peak at the same time.

That said, traveling with two babies clearly raises the difficulty. Sub-zero cold, icy roads, short days (sunset around 4 p.m.). That's exactly why a generous 7-day, 6-night schedule is a big advantage. You can see just one or two places a day and rest plenty in between at an onsen or indoors. Being able to choose 'ease' over an exhausting forced march is the core concept of this trip.

💡 The advantage of traveling as two families

With 4 adults, you can take turns watching the two babies. Agree in advance on a 'shift system' — while one team rests at the accommodation with a baby, the other goes grocery shopping or explores somewhere nearby. That way no one gets too worn out.

ℹ️ Onsen + babies: things to know in advance

Many hot springs restrict infants who aren't yet potty-trained from entering the large communal baths. If you're traveling with a baby, accommodations with a private open-air bath in the room or a 'kashikiri' (private reserved bath) are safer and more relaxing. Bath temperatures of 41–43°C are hot and carry a risk of dehydration, so keep babies in only briefly and use lukewarm water. Infant rules vary by facility, so check directly with your accommodation before booking (see the onsen page for details).

December 2026: What Sapporo Feels Like

Sapporo's city center in December sparkles more than any other time of year. The two main attractions, both held in Odori Park at the same time, are the White Illumination and the Munich Christmas Market.

Snow is all but guaranteed throughout December. With about 130 cm of snowfall (the total amount of snow that falls) over the month — making it, along with January, the snowiest period — there's a good chance you'll meet a 'white Sapporo' from your very first day. (That said, the snow depth accumulated on the ground is usually on the order of tens of centimeters, and the winter's maximum snow depth deepens to around 80–100 cm in February.)

⚠️ Confirm the 2026 dates officially before you go

The dates and times above are 'typical schedules' based on the 2024 and 2025 patterns (for 2025, the Odori section was confirmed as Nov 21–Dec 25, lighting 16:30–22:00, extended to midnight on Dec 23–25). Check the exact opening date, lighting hours, and whether there's a midnight extension for December 2026 one more time on the official Sapporo tourism site right before departure.

ℹ️ The Snow Festival is after this trip

Sapporo's biggest event, the 'Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri),' is usually held in early February. It doesn't overlap with a December trip, so plan the Illumination and Christmas Market as your main evening highlights instead.

Sapporo at a Glance (Defaults Before You Go)

The complicated stuff is covered on later pages. Here, just lock these 'defaults' into your head.

See the key-info cards to the right/below for detailed numbers.

⚠️ The outlets are different from Korea

Japan uses Type A plugs at 100V (50Hz in Hokkaido). Both the shape and the voltage differ from Korea (220V, Type C/F). Most phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage 100–240V, so you only need a 'Type A adapter' — but be sure to check the voltage on hair irons and some appliances. If you're traveling with babies, bringing a power strip plus one or two adapters is handy.

ℹ️ Tax-free shopping & duty-free limits when returning home

At Japanese Tax-Free stores, you can be exempt from consumption tax (10%) if you spend 5,000 yen or more at the same store on the same day (present your passport). When returning to Korea, the duty-free allowance on entry is USD 800 per person. For alcohol, up to 2 bottles totaling no more than 2L and USD 400 are separately duty-free, plus 200 cigarettes (those under 19 are excluded from alcohol and tobacco). If you voluntarily declare amounts over the limit, you get a 30% reduction on the duty (up to 200,000 won). Rules can change, so confirm with the Korea Customs Service before departure and return.

How to Use This Guide — Three Keywords

This guide keeps a single perspective all the way through. Every piece of information has been filtered through these three keywords: 'two families · traveling with babies · severe cold.'

Each theme page leads with the essentials, then follows with tables, lists, and callouts. We've kept things short so they read quickly with minimal energy. Prices are listed in both ¥ and ₩, and items that may change in the future (Dec 2026) are marked 'confirm officially before departure.'

💡 Here's a good way to read it

First read just this overview and the 'Top 5 Things to Remember' to get the big picture. Then pick the theme pages that interest you (onsen, food, transport, baby gear, etc.) and dive in.

Winter + Traveling with Babies: A Reality Check

Knowing the reality alongside the expectations in advance means fewer surprises.

Airfare rules differ by the baby's age. A 16-month-old (under 2) usually travels on a guardian's lap (infant fare), while a 33-month-old (2 or older) usually needs a separate seat (child fare). Age is usually based on the 'date of boarding,' so if a child turns 2 during the trip the seat rules may change. Seat, stroller-check, and infant car-seat rules differ by international route and airline, so confirm directly with the airline at the time of booking.

ℹ️ The exchange-rate note appears only once

All won amounts in this guide are reference figures converted at 100 yen ≈ 950 won (as of June 2026). The actual rate changes daily, so re-check it at the time of payment or currency exchange. (We won't repeat this exchange-rate explanation on later pages.)

⚠️ Save emergency contacts in advance

Japan's emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance (nationwide, free, 24 hours). For tourist support, the JNTO 'Japan Visitor Hotline' at 050-3816-2787 connects you 24 hours in Korean, English, and Chinese (accidents, illness, disasters, and tourist info). Since you're traveling with babies, check the locations of a pediatric clinic and a nighttime emergency medical facility near your accommodation right after you arrive.

Useful Words

温泉 (Onsen)Hot spring. There are many famous spots in the city's outskirts, such as Jozankei and Noboribetsu. Infants not wearing diapers may be restricted from the large communal baths, so a kashikiri (private reserved bath) is recommended.
イルミネーション (Illumination)Light displays made with bulbs. The White Illumination is the flagship event.
グリューワイン (Glühwein)Warm mulled wine (Glühwein). A specialty of the Christmas Market.
味噌ラーメン (Miso Ramen)Miso (soybean paste) ramen. Sapporo is famous as its birthplace.
ベビーカー (Baby Car / Stroller)Stroller. On icy stretches a baby carrier is often safer.
雪道 (Yukimichi)Snowy/icy roads. Anti-slip shoes and crampons recommended.

Key Points

  • December Sapporo means sub-zero severe cold plus snow and ice. Winter clothing and anti-slip preparation make or break the trip.
  • At Odori Park, the White Illumination and Munich Christmas Market run at the same time (usually through Dec 25). The highlight of the evening schedule.
  • About 2 hr 45 min nonstop, no time difference, visa-free for 90 days — a short-haul route that's easy even when traveling with babies.
  • Outlets are Type A 100V, different from Korea. An adapter is essential; check appliance voltage.
  • Don't be greedy with 7 days / 6 nights. One or two places a day + onsen/indoor rest so both families and babies stay un-exhausted.

Good to Know

'Sapporo' is widely believed to come from the Ainu words 'sat-poro-pet' = 'dry, large river' (referring to the Toyohira River).
Sapporo was the first city in Asia to host the Winter Olympics, in 1972.
Japan's oldest beer brand, 'Sapporo Beer,' was first brewed here in 1876 at the Kaitakushi (Development Commission) brewery.
It's the birthplace of miso ramen, which began at Sapporo's 'Aji no Sanpei (味の三平)' in the mid-1950s (commonly said to be around 1955).
The city was built on a grid plan centered on Odori Park (about 1.5 km long), which cuts through the middle of the city (after the Kaitakushi (開拓使, Development Commission) was established in 1869).
The Sapporo TV Tower (1957, 147.2 m tall) was designed by Tachu Naito (内藤多仲), who also designed Tokyo Tower.
With a population of about 1.96 million, it's Hokkaido's largest city and the largest city north of Tokyo (5th largest in Japan).

⚠ Confirm before you go

  • The exact opening/closing dates, lighting hours, and whether there's a midnight extension on Dec 23–25 for the 2026 White Illumination and Munich Christmas Market are not yet confirmed. This is a pattern confirmed for 2025 (Odori section Nov 21–Dec 25, 2025; market 11:00–21:00 / lighting 16:30–22:00, until 24:00 on Dec 23–25) and needs to be re-checked on the official site before departure.
  • The JR Rapid Airport fare was raised from ¥1,150 in 2024 and is currently confirmed at ¥1,230 (per JR Hokkaido's official English page and the 2026 access guide). However, some sources mention ¥1,430, suggesting a possible further fare revision, so it's recommended to confirm with JR Hokkaido officially right before your visit. The service interval (about 15 min) and travel time (about 37 min) also vary by timetable.
  • The exchange rate of 100 yen ≈ 950 won is a reference value as of June 2026, and the actual rate fluctuates constantly (the rate in Dec 2026 cannot be predicted).
  • Airline infant/child fares, whether a seat is required, stroller checking, and infant car-seat rules differ by airline and international-route policy. Age is usually based on the date of boarding, so if a child turns 2 during the trip the seat rules may change — confirm directly with the airline at the time of booking (Baby A at 33 months = may require a seat; Baby B at 16 months = lap travel allowed are general standards).
  • December temperature and snowfall figures are multi-year averages. 'Snowfall (snow that falls, about 130 cm)' and 'snow depth (snow accumulated on the ground, usually tens of cm)' are different concepts, and the actual weather in 2026 may differ.
  • The Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) is typically held in early February and does not overlap with this December trip (dates for each year are announced separately).
  • The 90-day visa-free stay and the Korea entry duty-free limits (USD 800, alcohol up to 2 bottles / 2L total and USD 400, 200 cigarettes) are based on current rules; it's recommended to re-check the latest rules with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Customs Service before departure and return.
  • Whether infants (before they stop wearing diapers) are allowed in the large communal baths and the age rules vary by facility, so check directly with the accommodation before booking.
  • The year miso ramen originated is given as both 1955 and 1958 across sources — the text uses the most widely accepted 'around 1955.'
