Why Winter Sapporo, and Why 7 Days / 6 Nights

The appeal of winter Sapporo can be summed up in one line: snow, hot springs, and food are all at their peak at the same time.

• Snow: December is the heart of the snow season, and along with January it's when the most snow falls. The city center turns into a snowscape of its own.
• Hot springs: Onsen areas like Jozankei (about 1 hour by car from the city) and Noboribetsu (about 1.5–2 hours by car or bus) are within reach even as day trips. Perfect for warming up from the cold.
• Food: From miso ramen and seafood to soup curry and Sapporo beer — everything that tastes even better when it's cold.

That said, traveling with two babies clearly raises the difficulty. Sub-zero cold, icy roads, short days (sunset around 4 p.m.). That's exactly why a generous 7-day, 6-night schedule is a big advantage. You can see just one or two places a day and rest plenty in between at an onsen or indoors. Being able to choose 'ease' over an exhausting forced march is the core concept of this trip.

December 2026: What Sapporo Feels Like

Sapporo's city center in December sparkles more than any other time of year. The two main attractions, both held in Odori Park at the same time, are the White Illumination and the Munich Christmas Market.

• White Illumination: Lights up the area around Odori Park, the front of Sapporo Station, and Minami 1-jo-dori. It usually opens in late November; the Odori Park section typically runs through December 25 (the Station-front and Minami 1-jo-dori sections are extended into February–March of the following year). Lighting hours are usually 16:30–22:00, and in many years it's extended until midnight on Dec 23–25.
• Munich Christmas Market: Held at Odori Park Block 2 (two blocks from the TV Tower), usually from late November to December 25, open 11:00–21:00. Free admission. It's full of warm Glühwein (mulled wine), German-style sausages, and Christmas decorations. Sapporo and Munich have been sister cities since 1972, and this market has been held since 2002, the 30th anniversary of that sister-city partnership.

Snow is all but guaranteed throughout December. With about 130 cm of snowfall (the total amount of snow that falls) over the month — making it, along with January, the snowiest period — there's a good chance you'll meet a 'white Sapporo' from your very first day. (That said, the snow depth accumulated on the ground is usually on the order of tens of centimeters, and the winter's maximum snow depth deepens to around 80–100 cm in February.)

Sapporo at a Glance (Defaults Before You Go)

• About 2 hours 30–45 minutes nonstop from Incheon (ICN) to New Chitose Airport (CTS). There's no time difference.
• Korean passport holders can stay visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days (at least 6 months of passport validity recommended).
• From the airport to downtown Sapporo, the JR Rapid Airport train takes about 37 minutes and runs about every 15 minutes (more often during daytime hours).
• December average temperatures are about -1°C high / about -6.5°C low. It feels even colder because of wind and ice.
• The currency is the yen (¥). Conversions are based on 100 yen ≈ 950 won (as of June 2026; exchange rates fluctuate constantly, so use this as a reference only).

Winter + Traveling with Babies: A Reality Check

Knowing the reality alongside the expectations in advance means fewer surprises.

• The days are short. Since sunset is around 4 p.m., it's best to pack outdoor activities into the morning through early afternoon.
• There's ice everywhere. Adults should consider anti-slip shoes/crampons, and for babies consider warmth + a safe way to get around (a baby carrier is safer than a stroller on many icy stretches).
• Indoor bases matter. Work 'places to warm up' — department stores, underground malls, indoor play areas — into your route.

Airfare rules differ by the baby's age. A 16-month-old (under 2) usually travels on a guardian's lap (infant fare), while a 33-month-old (2 or older) usually needs a separate seat (child fare). Age is usually based on the 'date of boarding,' so if a child turns 2 during the trip the seat rules may change. Seat, stroller-check, and infant car-seat rules differ by international route and airline, so confirm directly with the airline at the time of booking.
